Experimenting with the Informel Style

Following his Studio series, from 1968 to 1969, Nissho established a new style, using motifs with people and animals. He applied bright colored paint directly to the canvas and used unrestrained, carving strokes with a painting knife all over the canvas. This shift in painting styles was dramatic. Nissho acknowledged that his thick laying on of paint was influenced by the “Art Informel” abstract expressionist movement that came out of France in the late 1950s. In 1968, Nissho painted the Man With a Cow series in this style, followed in 1969 by the Men series that depicted a man and woman in embrace and a family around a table.
