This self-portrait was painted in 1956 when Nissho was 18 years of age. Around this time, he started to enter public entry exhibitions. In the portrait he wears a white collared shirt and has an unaffected facial expression. In his round cheeks we see traces of childhood innocence. Some of his paint-handling and painting techniques are still not well developed, but we already see the fine painting knife cuts that he used to greater effect in his later paintings.
