Terashima Haruo, Fence and Men

In the 1950s Terashima painted his Fence series to depict how people felt hemmed in by walls and fences. In Nissho’s scrapbook there is a photo of this work, which seems to have been the inspiration for his painting, Boards, Feet, Head. Terashima Haruo was born in Asahikawa in 1911. He presented many works through the Dokuritsu Exhibitions, and was a leading figure among painters in Tokachi until his death from illness in 1966. Terashima built a foundation for the younger generation of artists that survived him, such as Nissho, enabling them to strive for national attention by entering their artwork in national art competitions.
