Kanda Nissho, Study for Gathering

Four men are sitting around a low table. It looks to be a village youth meeting of some sort. Nissho must have created this piece for practice, as a study, because the depictions are rough, and there are almost no fine lines. He had entered a painting based on this piece in a local art exhibition in 1965, but unfortunately that painting’s whereabouts are unknown today. One person has said that he tore up the canvas himself after being told that showing young men gathering together could be taken as a sign of political agitation. In fact, for quite a while after this, Nissho stopped painting people. Eight years since his first public exhibition, he might have been trying to break out of his early painting style.
