Kanda Nissho, Still Life

This painting shows a large assortment of foodstuffs, from fruits and vegetables to chicken, fish, and dry goods. But the year it was painted, the Tokachi area experienced torrential rains and cold-weather damage that dealt a severe blow to settlers’ livelihoods. They were forced to abandon their farms in large numbers. People’s lives were a daily struggle for survival, so although the title of this work is simply Still Life, one can take it as wish fulfillment—hoping for an abundance that did not exist. The painting style is highly realistic, down to the finest detail. At the same time, items like the blue enamel container and opened cans feel quite flat. Nissho continued to use this distinctive style in his Studio series.
