Kanda Nissho, Interiors

Interiors, which Nissho painted close to the end of his abbreviated life, is considered the definitive statement of his artistic career. A man squats in a tiny room with walls pasted over top-to-bottom with newspaper. The oddness of this scene creates a strong impact. Miscellaneous items are scattered about the man’s feet, including a doll, a clock, fish picked to the bone, and apple peels. These items appear without shadows, so they lack true realism, heightening the sense of unease created overall. Some visible headlines from the newspaper on the walls include: “American Non-Intervention Called For” and “Nuclear Power Efforts Get Underway,” highlighting some of the current events issues of the day. Some of the ads displayed were ads that actually ran in the newspaper. The subject could only be Nissho himself, a man feeling shut in, overwhelmed by the surging wave of the times. Soon after he completed this painting, Nissho died suddenly of illness at the young age of 32. After spending his life struggling to put down roots in the frozen north country and painting in isolation, Nissho seems to have created a painting in which his true feelings are reflected in the man squatting in front of us.
