Ebihara Ei, March 30, 1969

Here, the artist produced an optical illusion—a trompe l’oeil—an oil painting made to look like actual newspaper by using a fine brush to faithfully reproduce the finest details, even the newspaper headlines. This technique can be considered an outgrowth of pop art techniques used in the 1960s. The artist, Ebihara Ei, was born in Tokyo in 1942. A friend of Nissho’s attested that Nissho used to spend time gazing at an image of this particular work. We can therefore assume that it gave him the idea for the newspaper pasted to the walls on Interiors, the painting he did in the year he passed away.
