Kitagawa Tamiji, Painter's Family

The painting depicts a family of four. The old man sitting behind the others seems to be Kitagawa at the age of 75. Although the image seems to show a happy family, nobody is smiling, and a vague sense of apprehension seems to pervade the canvas. The mood is quite similar to that of Nissho’s Interiors. Perhaps both artists felt the same spirit of the times. Nissho was fascinated with Kitagawa Tamiji, one of the artists whose artwork he had collected in printed materials from magazines. This painting was made public in 1969, the year that Nissho went to Tokyo. Kitagawa was born in 1894 in Shizuoka Prefecture. He went to America in 1914, and lived for 15 years in Mexico starting in 1923. After returning to Japan, he presented his work in the Nika Society Art Exhibition. Kitagawa was a sharp commentator on social issues of the day, creating paintings of students and citizens who were standing up to power and authority.
