Kanda Nissho, Fence and Man

In this painting, the eye is naturally drawn to the man looking straight at the viewer without expression from behind a fence that has newspapers and posters plastered all over it. Nissho painted this in 1969, at a time when Japan was right in the middle of its high economic growth period. The newspaper ads and posters of nude models reflect the pleasure-oriented mood of the times. But peeking out from underneath is lettering that suggests a poster related to the Vietnam War. Perhaps the irony is intended that Japan’s economic boom, and therefore its newly rich lifestyle was based on filling orders for materials that supported the war. The painting seems to pose a question to modern people—what is true affluence and well-being?
