A horse is drinking at the edge of a river, flanked by two men standing ankle-deep in the water, either bathing or drawing water. The horse and men are painted in simple form with thick lines, but the vigorous brushstrokes for shadowing give them three-dimensionality and a strong presence. Such distinctive forms can also be seen in Ebihara’s Seaside Cavalry, a print of which Nissho had hanging on the wall in his studio. The connection between this work and the composition and style in Nissho’s A Sunny-day Scene is clearly evident—in particular with the deformation of the man and horse, and the depiction of the motif with thick, vigorous contour lines.
