Kanda Nissho, An Abandoned Farm

Nissho almost never painted landscapes for public exhibition, but he did paint quite a few Tokachi landscapes as small pieces. Most depict scenes of late autumn. The scenes are full of loneliness, foreshadowing the onset of a long, harsh winter. Many scenes are difficult to identify as a particular location. It is more likely that Nissho was just trying to create an image with the landscapes, but he gave this one a title: An Abandoned Farm. Because of repeated damage from cold weather and mounting personal debt, people everywhere gave up farming and abandoned the land. Nissho himself experienced the harsh cold of the north and the isolation. Perhaps he thought of that abandoned homestead, with its shattered dreams, as his own self-image.
