The Ohgigahara Lookout Point offers a panoramic view of the Tokachi Plain. The stunning vista is the pride of the town of Shikaoi. Although this painting presents the actual view from that elevated point, in many of Nissho’s landscapes it is difficult to tell precisely what location they depict. The ones that can be identified are much fewer. This painting was actually commissioned by Obihiro Shinkin Bank for their bank calendar. By this time, Nissho had become a well-known artist, and he was steadily getting more commissions for his paintings. It is likely that he chose this popular view in light of the fact that the image, on a calendar, would grace the living rooms of many homes.
