From this series of sketches that extends over eleven pages, we can see the many ideas that filled Nissho’s head. The pen and pencil lines somehow seem very alive. A horse suddenly appears in a room with houses around, a desk, a sleigh, a wood stove, fish bones, a person—most share no logical connection. Even though the scene is indoors we see the facades of houses; human feet stick out from beneath the desk. Such oddities give the sketches a completely different feel from Nissho’s completed oil paintings. You also find one in which he has drawn a horse in a very similar pose to the horse in his last unfinished work. One can look at the sketches with endless fascination, wondering what he must have been about to create.
